In the heart of Valle Delle Ferriere

The natural reserve of the Amalfi Coast offers moments of absolute peace. A meditation in motion for those who want to leave behind the world’s noise and find refuge in its pristine landscape.

More than a walk, it is a walking meditation. The intense green of the surrounding nature, the silence, and the spontaneous contemplation that happens step by step transform the itinerary that climbs inside the Valle Delle Ferriere in a sacred rite.

The Path

The protected reserve stretches along a path from Monti Lattari descends towards Amalfi, and vice versa, crossing woods and streams. Its name derives from factories specialized in ironworking of medieval origin which were once located inside the green area. The Valley is divided into two parts: the high part, which covers the territory of Scala, where these factories were found, and the low part near Amalfi, which exhibits, besides the beauty of the landscape, ancient paper mills where the famous Amalfi paper was produced.

Departure from Scala

The starting point of the most famous path in the village of Pontone is a small hamlet of Scala, 225 meters above sea level. From Pontone, the path leading to the heart of Valle Delle Ferriere passes through Rio Canneto, the river which, besides irrigating crops, also supplied energy for factories, ancient ruins, natural waterfalls, and a wooded environment very different from any other present on the Amalfi Coast.

Guardian of biodiversity

The Ferriere Valley is famous for its biodiversity. Vegetation is grown thanks to the subtropical microclimate that characterizes the entire area. The rocky mountains protect it from cold winds to the north, while the site to the south enjoys the warm currents coming from the sea. These climatic conditions have allowed the growth and conservation of a giant fern dating back to the Cenozoic period, the Woodwardia radicans, a symbol of the Valley. Surrounded by such unspoiled natural splendor, the melodic rhythm of the waterfalls and the feeling of freedom and peace that one feels as one walks along the path allow anyone to leave the noise of the world behind.

The Luminaria of San Domenico’s flames

On August 3, the first Authentic Amalfi Coast excursion tour made its debut in collaboration with Cartotrekking and with the support of the Amalfi Coast Tourist Guides Association. A walk along the streets of Praiano peeps out at Piazza San Gennaro, home of the famous festival.
