During the Byzantine New Year<\/strong>, Amalfi returns to the splendour of the Middle Ages, when the entire Amalfi Coast<\/strong> united its towns under the powerful Maritime Duchy<\/strong>, weaving trade routes across the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n

The event begins on August 30<\/strong> with a historical and cultural conference<\/strong>, offering insights into the era.<\/p>\n

On September 1<\/strong>, an impressive and moving procession<\/strong> of over 100 participants in historical costumes<\/strong> winds its way from Valle dei Mulini<\/strong>, through the heart of Amalfi, and along the Amalfi Coast Road<\/strong> to Atrani<\/strong>. This grand parade reenacts the wedding procession of Sergio III<\/strong>, son of Duke Giovanni I<\/strong> and grandson of Duke Mansone I<\/strong>, who in the year 1002<\/strong> married Maria, daughter of Prince Pandolfo II of Benevento and Capua<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Byzantine New Year presents an expanded version of the Historical Parade<\/strong> that each year accompanies the Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics<\/strong>. Among the participants are representatives of the ducal government, nobles, knights, ladies, pages, valets, archers, sailors, and common folk<\/strong>, creating an evocative and historically accurate spectacle.<\/p>\n

The procession culminates in the nomination of the Magister of Amalfitan Civilization<\/strong>, an honorary title awarded to a distinguished individual from Amalfi or the surrounding region<\/strong>. The ceremony takes place in the Church of San Salvatore de\u2019 Birecto in Atrani<\/strong>, faithfully recreating the coronation ritual of the Dukes of Amalfi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This event is deeply rooted in the history of the Amalfi Maritime Republic<\/strong>. On September 1<\/strong>, the fiscal and judicial year<\/strong> officially began in the Eastern Byzantine Empire, of which Amalfi and the Coast were a semi-autonomous territory<\/strong>. On this day, the comites<\/strong>\u2014the heads of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi<\/strong>\u2014would take office, a tradition that lasted from the republic\u2019s founding in 839 AD<\/strong> through the early 10th century<\/strong>. The practice was later revived in 1266 under the Angevin rule<\/strong> and continued until the reign of the Bourbon kings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
