Spending Ferragosto in Maiori means experiencing one of the most heartfelt religious celebrations on the Costa d\u2019Amalfi. On 15 August, the town honours the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Santa Maria a Mare, patron saint of Maiori, with a programme of rituals, processions and spectacular fireworks by the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 August: The \u201cAlzata del Panno\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The celebrations officially begin on 5 August with the traditional alzata del panno<\/em> (raising of the banner).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A large hand-painted canvas depicting the Virgin Mary is hoisted in the centre of Corso Reginna. This symbolic gesture marks the start of the festivities and brings together residents, returning families and visitors who choose Maiori for their summer holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

14\u201315 August: Lights, Music and Preparation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From 14 August, the atmosphere becomes increasingly festive. The streets are decorated with elaborate luminarie (festive light displays), and local bands perform throughout the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside the Collegiate Church, the wooden statue of Santa Maria a Mare, kept during the year in a niche within the right apse, is prepared for the procession. According to tradition, the statue is dressed exclusively by women in a finely crafted gown and a mantle embroidered with gold thread and coloured silk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15 August: The Procession and the \u201cCorsa della Madonna\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The highlight of Ferragosto in Maiori takes place on the evening of 15 August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statue is carried in solemn procession through the streets, accompanied by prayer and participation from the entire community. The most anticipated moment is the corsa della Madonna<\/em>: as the procession returns, the statue is carried at speed up the long staircase leading to the Collegiate Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This dramatic and deeply symbolic ritual is one of the most distinctive religious traditions on the Costa d\u2019Amalfi, attracting visitors who wish to experience authentic local culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
