Praiano NaturArte. Path 2: Sandro Mautone

According to local mythology, the three islets of Li Galli, in front of Praiano and off the coast
of Positano, represent the petrified bodies of the Sirens in the Odyssey. Having challenged
Orpheus in a singing contest and having been defeated, the Sirens threw themselves off a
cliff. Via Costantinopoli looks out over these three islets and for Mautone the myth of the
Sirens was the inspiration for his work. The artist created a series of majolica panels,
installed at irregular distances, which illustrate some of the most significant moments of
Odysseus’ journey.

Sandro Mautone’s Artworks

Sandro Mautone is an artist. He moulds his thoughts in majolica, giving shape to a refined sign, to a decorative art with a sophisticated and highly personal taste. Born in Naples, educated at the Academy of Fine Arts and resident on the Amalfi Coast for over twenty years, he has been able to combine his solid visual culture with the authentic essence of the land in which he choosed to live and work. His career seems to be written in his name: “Mautone”, which in Neapolitan refers to the brick, the primary element of terracotta construction.

A cultured man of few words and many books, he discovered ceramics through introspection and patient observation. During his long stay in Praiano, he studied and reinterpreted the signs of 20th-century Mediterranean art. He drew inspiration from the ceramic traditions of the Amalfi Coast. He reimagined historic decoration with a personal touch, always focusing on simplicity and lightness. This led to a unique style, with one-of-a-kind pieces. Each detail is carefully thought out and never conventional.

His art does not follow trends or seek fame. It takes shape in silence, listening, and careful, precise movements. He renews tradition with elegance and originality, never betraying it. Mautone does not copy or force things. He builds his work with discipline and creativity. He loves his craft and sees it as a deep form of visual thinking.
