Caruso was inspired by an old folktale in which the bay of Marina di Praia was under the reign of the janare, mythical figures that would fly at night over local waters on board boats that they stole from the fishermen.
He has portrayed mythical figures disguised as sirens, sailors or bishops, going beyond the conventional representation by giving them grotesque representations.

Enzo Caruso’s artworks
Enzo Caruso taught ceramic design from 1963 to 1996 at the Filiberto Menna State Institute of Art in Salerno. In 1975 he was one of the founders of the Fornelle workshop in Salerno, where he made ceramics inspired by the Vietrese archetype. He currently has a workshop in Vietri sul mare, where he creates unique pieces and ceramic sculptures that he exhibits in Italy and abroad. Over the years, his technical experimentation has particularly focused on the material effects of glazes, working on dosages, compositions and different melting temperatures. This particular aspect emerges strongly in the 10 works that make up his NaturArte exhibition.
